Originally released in 1978 as the B-side of a single that did not become a hit, "I Will Survive" turned into one of the most iconic songs of the disco era.

"I felt it was time to tell that story," says Gaynor, speaking on the phone from her home in New Jersey. Gaynor has a story in the book, about the death of her sister after an attack on the street, and also, in the introduction, discusses being molested at age 5 by a trusted neighbor, again at 12 by her stepfather, and being raped at 18 by an acquaintance - revelations she'd not previously made public. All of the writers describe some degree of solace and support from the song. Collected from writing groups, support organizations, online solicitations and stories shared on Gaynor's website, the tales of enduring and recovering from difficult and often tragic occurrences include a mother raising an autistic son, a concentration camp survivor and a first responder to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. "I find such powerful inspiration from 'I Will Survive,' " writes Naumkin in an essay about her family's ordeal titled "Humming the Song." It's among approximately 40 stories from people collected in Gaynor's new book, "We Will Survive," which is subtitled, "True Stories of Encouragement, Inspiration and the Power of Song" (Grand Harbor Press 196 pages $14.95).
